The Gellhorn pessary (long stem) is used to help relieve symptoms of cystocele, rectocele, and second or third-degree uterine prolapse. It is commonly prescribed for more advanced prolapse where additional internal support is required.

This version features a long, flexible stem with a knob, which can be folded to aid both insertion and removal. The Gellhorn pessary works by providing firm internal support while remaining stable once correctly positioned.

The Gellhorn pessary is intended for clinical use and should be fitted and managed by a trained healthcare professional.

Insertion & Removal

Insertion

The long stem can be folded towards the base to facilitate insertion.

Fold the stem forward towards the pessary base.

Insert the base vertically into the vagina and gently guide it into the required position.

Once positioned, the pessary provides firm internal support.

Initial fitting must be carried out by a trained healthcare professional.

Removal

To remove, gently break the suction of the pessary base using a finger.

Once suction is released, gradually guide the base towards the introitus for removal.

The stem will fold to assist removal.

In some cases, clinicians may use sponge forceps to grip the stem if additional assistance is required.

Indications & Key Features

The iDish Pessary with Support is designed to help relieve stress urinary incontinence, either on its own or in combination with pelvic organ prolapse symptoms. This urethral dish pessary features an enlarged support pilot, providing increased urethral support compared to a standard urethral dish. The enhanced design helps reduce bladder leakage during activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing or physical movement.

It is intended for professional fitting and clinical management, and is suitable for stress urinary incontinence and stress incontinence associated with prolapse symptoms.

Gellhorn long stem Pessary faqs

What is a vaginal pessary and what is it used for?

A vaginal pessary is a removable device placed inside the vagina to support pelvic organs. It is commonly used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (such as cystocele or rectocele) and stress urinary incontinence. Pessaries provide internal support to relieve symptoms and improve comfort without the need for surgery.

Is a pessary a safe alternative to surgery?

Yes, pessaries are considered a safe, conservative, and reversible treatment option for many people with prolapse or stress incontinence. They are often recommended as an alternative to surgery or while waiting for surgical treatment. Modern pessaries are typically made from medical-grade silicone and are designed for long-term use under professional guidance.

How do I know which pessary type and size is right for me?

Choosing the correct type and size is essential for comfort and effectiveness. A healthcare professional, such as a gynaecologist or women’s health physiotherapist, should assess your condition and fit the pessary properly. They can also show you how to insert, remove, and clean it safely.

What is a Gellhorn pessary used for?

It is used to manage advanced uterine prolapse, cystocele and rectocele where firmer internal support is required.

When is a long stem Gellhorn recommended over other pessaries?

A long stem Gellhorn is typically recommended when ring or dish pessaries do not provide sufficient retention or support. A healthcare professional will determine the most appropriate option based on clinical assessment.
